I have read studies on how learning karate and music have a similar effect on brain development. A karate student has to think about right, left, finger, hand, arm, leg, torso, foot and toe position all at the same time. This requires a huge amount of concentration. In karate we do kata which are a preset sequence of movement that must be performed with exact precision of movement and timing. The kata were developed by monks, centuries ago, to develop strength and concentration. I have watched students be transformed in very short amounts of time, having a much greater ability to focus. I have taught many students with learning disabilities as well as ADD and ADHD. The structure of the classes and the kata are very conducive to learning and applying concentration. It is truly amazing to watch students learn first the difference between right and left, leading to much finer motor skills. It is amazing to watch students think through this process. Many students become frustrated and want to give up. If the parents and the teacher can keep from criticizing the student, the student discovers movement at his/her own pace. It is important to build confidence in the student until the student can realize that they can actually do it. If the student is allowed to give up after initial frustration I believe that pattern may be followed for a lifetime. Conversely, if the student learns to achieve beyond the point of frustration the student will learn to “never give up”.
