Through close interaction, wrestling and sparring, children get a strong sense of their own space. Defending that space becomes second nature. The criminal element in our society tends to prey upon the apprehension a victim has to strike back. This means reacting immediately to provocation without hesitation, but not necessarily violently. Children learn that their best weapons of protection are their
eyes, their voice, and their legs (for running). Be aware of where you are and what’s going on around you; use your words to get yourself out of a situation; run away if you can, scream if you can’t. I believe an awareness of one’s surroundings is infinitely more important than the ability to fight. Karate teaches kids this awareness. Being strong physically improves posture and makes one a less likely
target, while being aware of one’s surroundings helps to avoid getting into confrontational situations before they have the chance to begin.
